HE SENT JENNY home early. A little Christmas present for her. Karla was speaking to him by the time she went home at eleven, though he knew he would continue to hear about how he had âmessed withâ her breakfast for the next few days at least.
Aside from housekeeping, he was the only person working in the hotel. Again. The Browns had checked out, long gone and on their way to Disney World. The drunk was gone, too. They had only one reservation for today, coming in late. And one guest to check out: Mr. Marino.
Guests are supposed to check out by noon, but noon came and went, and no Mr. Marino. Didnât matter. They didnât need the room. And Jason wasnât in a hurry to see him anyway.
He didnât know what to say. He didnât know what to think. He knew that he wished he was gone already. And he knew that he wished even more Mr. Marino wasnât going anywhere at all. And he knew that he was leaving, knew that he would never see him again. Jason knew a lot, and knew nothing at the same time.
He still didnât know Mr. Marinoâs first name.
Jason sat at the desk. Exhaustion hit him hard, and he felt his eyes involuntarily drooping shut. He poured himself some coffee and, with Karla gone, grabbed whatever was left in the kitchenâa banana, an orange, a small box of cereal. So this was his Christmas dinner. He sat at the desk, eating the cereal dry. The corporate magazine lay in front of him. He really didnât want to read again about how Mamá Munoz had worked hard to change her life and the lives of her sons. He worked hard. Damned hard. But his life wasnât changing. It was stagnant. Empty. Empty as the hotel, empty as this Christmas was turning out to be. Jason thought of Mr. Marino. His eyes dampened. He swallowed hard. Picking up the magazine, he disgustedly tossed it into the trash.
âYou left,â said a voice behind him. Mr. Marino.
Jason swallowed and forced a smile. âGood afternoon. Are you ready to check out?â
Mr. Marino leaned against the desk and looked at Jason. âWhy did you leave?â His voice was tense, clipped. He seemedâangry.
âI didnât want to disturb you,â Jason said quietly, tapping away at his keyboard. Anything to distract from answering his questions. âI had to get back to work.â
âYou left at ten. You werenât scheduled to be back here until noon.â
Jason looked up. âHow did you know that?â
Mr. Marino tried to lock eyes with Jasonâs, but Jason avoided his gaze. âAnswer my question first. Why didnât you stay? Was this just some hookup for you? Do you think Iââ
âI donât even know your first name!â Jason said, a little louder than he intended. His small outburst seemed to take some of the tension out of room. He sighed. âI donât know what you think happened between us. I donât know what I think happened between us. It was amazing.
